Easter Season · Year A
Fifth Sunday of Easter
May 3, 2026
Overview & Insights
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6)
The farewell discourse opens with a command against fear and a promise of room: the Father’s house has many dwelling places (monai, v. 2), a noun related to the verb “abide” that governs chapter 15. The passage then advances by misunderstanding, the pattern John uses throughout. Thomas objects that they do not know the way (v. 5) and draws the reply of v. 6; Philip asks to be shown the Father (v. 8) and draws the claim that seeing Jesus is seeing him (v. 9). Both requests assume the goal lies elsewhere, and both are answered by a person rather than a route. The promise that believers will do greater works than his (v. 12) is grounded not in their capacity but in his going to the Father. Read in the weeks after Easter, the going and the coming again have already happened, and the discourse is heard from the far side of the tomb.
