Gérôme's Moses stands alone on a summit above cloud, dark against the light, the figure reduced almost to a silhouette. The cloud covered the mountain, and the glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. The appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel.Private collectionIn private hands, which is why it is seen in reproduction far more often than in the flesh.Private collection

Overview & Insights

"The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai... the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain." (Exodus 24:16-17)

God calls Moses up Mount Sinai to receive the stone tablets of the law, and Moses enters the cloud of God's glory for forty days and forty nights. The mountain, wrapped in cloud and fire, becomes the site where heaven and earth visibly meet.
