Overview & Insights

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42)

This is the first of three short summary panels Luke uses to mark the seams of his narrative (with 4:32-35 and 5:12-16), idealizing paragraphs that describe a condition rather than an event. The four items in v. 42 have often been read as an early order of worship, though the definite articles may simply point to established practices rather than a sequence. The shared possessions of vv. 44-45 are described in language at home in Greek writing about friendship, and Luke’s own later account of Ananias shows that the sharing was voluntary rather than required (5:4). The community is still keeping temple hours in v. 46 while breaking bread in houses, so no separation from Judaism has occurred. The last clause is the one that matters structurally: the growth is attributed to the Lord, not to the practices just listed. On Good Shepherd Sunday the panel supplies a picture of a flock seen from outside.
