Overview & Insights

“Why do you seek the living among the dead?” (Luke 24:5)

Luke’s account of the tomb keeps the women’s initiative at its centre: they have watched the burial and prepared spices (23:55-56), kept the sabbath, and come at first light to finish work that Friday’s haste left undone. They find the stone rolled away and no body, and it is “two men in dazzling apparel” who supply the meaning. Luke has used that pair before at the transfiguration (9:30) and will use it again at the ascension (Acts 1:10). What the messengers say is distinctive. Where Mark sends the disciples on to Galilee (Mark 16:7), Luke’s angels point backwards, telling the women to remember what Jesus said “while he was still in Galilee”, and the words recalled are the passion predictions of 9:22 and 18:31-33. Everything that follows in this Gospel stays in and around Jerusalem, and the risen Christ is met on the Emmaus road rather than in the north.
