Overview & Insights
“Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.” (Luke 24:5-6)
Luke’s empty tomb turns on memory rather than on appearance. The two men in dazzling clothes issue no commission to Galilee, as Mark 16:7 does; they tell the women to remember what was said “while he was still in Galilee” (v. 6), and the words recalled in v. 7 are the passion predictions of 9:22 and 18:32-33. Luke withholds the women’s names until after their report (v. 10), and three of them, Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Mary the mother of James, reach back to the women who had followed and provided for Jesus since 8:2-3. The apostles’ verdict that the report was an idle tale uses leros, a word for the raving of the delirious, and belongs to Luke alone. Peter’s run to the tomb in v. 12 is missing from some manuscripts and has long been suspected of borrowing from John 20:3-10; either way the scene ends in wonder, not yet in faith.
