Easter Vigil Third Reading
April 15, 2028
Overview & Insights
“They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.” (Luke 24:2)
The Vigil reaches this passage at the end of a long sequence of Old Testament lessons, and the Gospel answers them with a question rather than a proclamation, asking why the living should be sought among the dead (v. 5). Luke’s handling of the disciples is unsparing. The women, three of whom he finally names at v. 10, including Joanna, a supporter of the mission since 8:3, bring the report to the eleven, and it is dismissed. The Greek of v. 11 is blunter than most translations allow, since leros is a medical term for the babbling of the delirious, and it is the apostles, not the women, who fail at this point. Verse 12, Peter’s run to the tomb and his puzzled return, is absent from a few Western witnesses and closely parallels John 20:3-10, which has led some to treat it as an early addition, though the manuscript support for it is in fact strong.
