Overview & Insights

“The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.” (Titus 2:11)

The grounding conjunction at verse 11 attaches this compact summary of the gospel to the household instructions just given (2:1-10), so that the behavior asked of older men, younger women and slaves is answerable to what God has done. Two appearings frame the paragraph, the grace that has already appeared bringing salvation for all (v. 11) and the awaited appearing of glory (v. 13), from the same verb that gives Epiphany its name. The second of these is one of the few New Testament sentences in which the titles God and Savior most naturally fall together on Jesus, a reading defended on grammatical grounds since the eighteenth century. Verse 14 closes in covenant language, a people of his own possession, which reaches back to Exodus 19:5 and Deuteronomy 14:2 and hands the newborn child Israel’s own vocation.
