A lawyer tests Jesus by asking what he must do to inherit eternal life, and Jesus answers with a parable in which a despised Samaritan, not the priest or Levite, proves to be the true neighbor. The story redefines neighbor-love as active, costly mercy that crosses ethnic and religious lines.
