Gérôme's Moses stands alone on a summit above cloud, dark against the light, the figure reduced almost to a silhouette. Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai … Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain.Private collectionIn private hands, which is why it is seen in reproduction far more often than in the flesh.Private collection

Overview & Insights

"The glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel." (Exodus 24:17)

Moses throws the blood of the covenant on the people, and he, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders go up the mountain, see the God of Israel, and eat and drink in his presence. Moses then goes up further into the cloud that covers the mountain for six days, and on the seventh day the Lord calls to him out of the fire like glory, where Moses stays forty days and nights.
