A Savior Born This Day

Shepherds pressing in from the right with their hats off and their hands together, a woman behind them carrying a basket on her head, a bound lamb lying in the straw at the front, and the child awake on the manger. High in the sky there is one small angel, and on the hillside behind, the flock and the figures being told.In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And the angel said, To you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.Jusepe de RiberaRibera, who worked in Naples and painted holy scenes with the faces of people he had actually seen.Musée du Louvre, ParisThe Musée du Louvre in Paris.Musée du Louvre, Paris

Overview & Insights

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11)

Luke sets the birth inside the machinery of empire, and the contrast is the point: a decree from Augustus, whose own inscriptions advertise a peace achieved by arms, produces the journey in which peace is announced by angels over a feeding trough. The optional continuation to verse 20 completes a movement the shorter form leaves open, since the shepherds are given a sign, go to verify it, and end by glorifying God, the first in this Gospel to do so. Their standing matters to Luke, who repeatedly puts news first into the hands of those with no authority to carry it. The wording of verse 12, wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger, is repeated almost exactly in verse 16, one of this evangelist’s quiet devices for showing that word and event agree.
