Luke 2:16-21
Mary Treasured All These Things
January 1, 2026
Overview & Insights
“But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19)
The reading picks up after the angels have withdrawn and follows the shepherds, who go, find and then tell, becoming the first in this Gospel to proclaim what they have been told (v. 17). Luke’s narrative habit is to note the reaction of a crowd and then the reaction of one person, so the general amazement of verse 18 stands beside Mary, who keeps these things and turns them over (v. 19). The same verb returns at 2:51, after the loss in the temple, framing the childhood narrative and hinting at where Luke believed his material came from. Verse 21 brings the circumcision on the eighth day required at Leviticus 12:3, and with it the naming, which carries out Gabriel’s instruction at 1:31 as exactly as Zechariah’s household had done at 1:63. The name itself, Yeshua, means the Lord saves.
