"Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare." (Jeremiah 29:7)
In a letter to the Judean exiles in Babylon, Jeremiah instructs them to settle in for the long haul: build houses, plant gardens, marry, and multiply. Surprisingly, he also tells them to seek the peace and prosperity of the very pagan city that holds them captive, since their welfare is now bound up with its own.
