"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever." (John 14:16)

In his farewell discourse Jesus answers Philip's request to see the Father and promises that the Spirit of truth will come to dwell with the disciples. This is the Gospel appointed for Pentecost because it names the coming Spirit as the ongoing presence of Jesus with the church.
