Luke 22:7-20
I Have Earnestly Desired This
April 13, 2028
Overview & Insights
“This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” (Luke 22:20)
Luke’s preparation scene works like the entry into Jerusalem: two named disciples are sent, a stranger is identified by a sign, and the arrangements turn out to have been made in advance (cf. 19:29-34). The man carrying a water jar would have been conspicuous, since drawing water was ordinarily women’s work. At the table Jesus speaks first of desire, of having earnestly desired to eat this Passover before he suffers (v. 15), and then of not eating or drinking again until the kingdom comes, all before any word over the bread. The result is an order found only here, with a cup before the bread as well as after it, which has prompted much reconstruction of early eucharistic practice. Verses 19b-20, containing the cup of the new covenant and the command to do this in remembrance, are absent from Codex Bezae and some Old Latin manuscripts, and are shared almost verbatim with 1 Corinthians 11:24-25.
