Luke opens his gospel by explaining that he has carefully investigated the events handed down by eyewitnesses so that Theophilus may know the truth. In the Nazareth synagogue, Jesus reads Isaiah's promise of good news to the poor and announces that the scripture is fulfilled that very day.
