"And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High." (Genesis 14:18)

After Abram's rescue of Lot, the mysterious king-priest Melchizedek blesses him and brings out bread and wine, a brief scene the church has long read as a foreshadowing of the Eucharist and of a priesthood, celebrated in Psalm 110, that does not depend on descent from Levi.
