Sermon by Rolf D. Svanoe
Spring Valley and Spring Grove- do you ever get the two cities mixed up? I do all the time. Soon after I arrived in Harmony, I had a pastor’s meeting in Spring Grove. It was a beautiful day and I was enjoying the weather - until I ended up in Spring Valley and realized I had arrived at the wrong town. When I left Harmony, I drove north on Main Street three blocks to the highway. Which way do I turn - left or right? The decision of where to turn began in my head. My assumptions about where this meeting was supposed to be landed me in a totally wrong place.
The same thing happens when many people read the book of Revelation. They assume that it contains predictions about the end-times, and that we are living in them. They assume that the things described in Revelation are events we are experi…

Introductive Insight:Ways of Interpreting Revelation · There are five main theories about how Revelation should be interpreted: preterist, historicist, futurist, idealist, and eclectic:
The preterist theory views Revelation as relating only to the time in which John lived rather than to any future period. John communicates to first-century readers how God plans to deliver them from the wickedness of the Roman Empire.
The historicist theory argues that Revelation gives an overview of the major movements of church history from the first century until the return of Christ.
The futurist theory claims that most of Revelation (usually chapters 4–22) deals with a future time just before the end of history.
The idealist theory maintains that Revelation is a symbolic portrayal of the ongoing confl…

Commentary · The Epiphany of the Glorious SonCommentaryThe Epiphany of the Glorious Son
John moves from the revelation of Jesus and its prophetic urgency to an epistolary greeting (1:4a). From the highest height of heaven, where God’s throne resides (Isa. 6:1; 1 Enoch 14:18, 22), grace and peace pour forth from the one “who is, and who was, and who is to come,” a divine title meant to be read as a single name and a theological reflection on Exodus 3:14, when Yahweh revealed himself as “I am who I am” (1:4b; a rabbinic commentary on this text [Exodus Rabbah 3.14] expands the name to: “I am he who was, and I am he now, and I am he forever. So it is said three times, I am.”). Before the throne is the Holy Spirit in the form of seven spirits, an allusion to the sevenfold ministry in Isaiah 11:2–3. The Hebrew text of Isaiah 11:2–3 only mentions six spirits, but its Greek translat…
The Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary by Gary M. Burge, Baker Publishing Group, 2016
Big Idea: John’s greeting from the Father, Spirit, and Son results in praise to God and anticipation of Christ’s return, and is a powerful reminder of God’s sovereign control over the universe.
Understanding the Text
The prologue (1:1–8) continues with a greeting and doxology (1:4–6) followed by a prophetic confession (1:7–8). John’s greeting of grace and peace to the seven churches compares to the kind of greeting we find in Paul’s letters, but John includes a fuller description of the source of the greeting: the Triune God. One reason this section packs such rhetorical punch is the repetition of threes throughout (e.g., threefold description of both the Father and the Son). The number three, which represents sufficiency and completeness, reinforces the importance of what is being com…

One morning a little girl sat at a kitchen table to eat breakfast with her mother and father. As she listened to the prayer her father prayed before the meal, she was especially intrigued that he thanked God for God's presence everywhere.
After the father finished his prayer the little girl asked him, "Father, is it really true that God is everywhere?"
"Yes," said her father.
"Is God in this house?" she asked.
"Yes," her father said.
"Is God in this kitchen?"
"Yes," her father said.
"Is God on this table?" she asked.
"Yes," her father said.
The little girl hesitated and then asked, "Is God in this cup?"
Her father said, "Yes."
Upon hearing this the little girl quickly covered the cup with her hand and exclaimed, "I've got Him!"

Who do you say that I am? I would suggest to you this morning that that is the most urgent, the most relevant, the most theological question that confronts us today. Wherever we turn in life we are faced with the implications of this question.
Throughout the ages various individuals have attempted to answer that question posed by Jesus. Ernest Renan, a French writer, answered it by saying that Jesus was a sentimental idealist. Bruce Barton, an American businessman, said that who Jesus was the greatest salesman who …

With the coming of the Holy Spirit an exclamation point was added to the Christian witness. Excitement had arrived. Power was present. Unbelief vanished. Fear fled. God, full throttle, was busy putting punch into preaching - cracking walls of unbelief, and giving the apostles a spiritual trip that they had never imagined possible.
At Pentecost the church is born. It had ceased to be an expectant enclave and now becomes a witnessing community. What emerged that day was a congregation filled with the power, excited over the message of salvation through Jesus Christ, alive at worship, consumed with love for one another, and devoted to the Lord. Their ministry was so positive that Luke tells us that the whole city was favorable to the…

Joel Gregory became the pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, an impressive congregation with almost thirty thousand members. It was the crowning achievement of a preacher career. First Baptist Church occupies five city blocks in downtown Dallas. It houses two schools, a college, and a radio station. The church gave him a nice home, memberships in exclusive country clubs, and luxury box seats for Dallas Cowboys football games. They weren't box seats for the kingdom, but in Dallas a box seat for one is as good as a box seat for another.
But something went wrong in Gregory's pastorate. Church leaders wanted more members; thirty thousand weren't enough. People wanted the physical plant to grow; five city blocks wasn't big enough. Most of all, everyone expected Gregory to tag along behind…

Your child's journey from 4 to 14 is very short. Christian parents need to put God into each day during this impressionable time. As a father of five foster children and a preschool teacher for 10 years, I'm convinced that the following practices instilled early can teach children to hold onto God during the difficult adolescent period:
Hang a picture of Christ in each child's bedroom. Children are often quicker to respond to pictures than to words.
Teach your child how to pray. By the time a child is 5, he should be able to speak one-sentence prayers with a parent. By the time he's 6, he should be looking for answers to his prayers. But avoid correcting a child's prayers. They are …

I am sure that some of us have felt vengeful in the last week. Perhaps we have even sought to hurt or discredit someone who first hurt us. One day he asked this 90-year-young woman, "What is the secret of your power? What keeps you happy, contented and cheerful through y…
