“But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression.” (Micah 3:8)
In many passages in the writings of the classical prophets, we find condemnations of false prophets in Israel, who led the people astray by their preaching (see Jer. 23:9–22; Ezek. 13:1–16). Sometimes the message of such false prophets was in direct contradiction to what the true prophet was proclaiming (see 1 Kgs. 22:5–28; Jer. ch. 28; 29:9–11). Often false prophets were condemned by the classical prophets for their immorality, as is the case in this passage. Judging from the record that we have, it was not easy for the Israelites to distinguish false prophecy from true. When the people heard two contradictory messages, how were they to judge which was actually the word of the Lord? That is still a dilemma sometimes faced by modern churchgoers. It is the morality of the false prophets that is called into question in this passage.
