"You shall shepherd my people Israel and shall be commander of Israel." (2 Samuel 5:2)
All the tribes of Israel come to David at Hebron and anoint him king over the whole nation, having already recognized him as their shepherd and commander even while Saul reigned. It is the founding moment of David's united kingship, the pattern the lectionary reads typologically against Christ's kingship on the cross.
